History of Lavant House
Lavant House is a Grade II listed Georgian building, set within 12 acres of land and surrounded by Georgian, Victorian and post-war ancillary buildings. With some Medieval foundations still in evidence, the house itself was built by the Chichester merchant Sir John Miller, most likely in 1705-1710. Through extensive recent architectural analysis, we can determine 6 subsequent and complicated phases of enlargement having been undertaken, with the last being the West wing extension in the 1860s which results in the present edifice we see today.
The house’s position within the South Downs landscape adds further significance framed by ancient chalk downs, historic farmland, and the River Lavant. Restoration work has been guided by heritage principles to preserve surviving fabric, while modern adaptation ensures the building continues to play a meaningful role in the life of West Lavant. Lavant House stands today as a testament to three centuries of local history of a house that has adapted to each era while maintaining its quiet dignity and timeless charm.
A colourful array of proprietors and inhabitants have graced the pages of the estate’s history books; from private owners including the Dukes of Richmond and Lennox of nearby Goodwood House, Italian and German prisoners-of-war during WW2, hundreds of schoolgirls 1952 - 2016 while the estate existed as Lavant House School, and even a fabled ghost, The Blue Lady, who still reputedly glides the halls.
